Post-War Recovery

Post-War Recovery: Supporting Ukraine’s Reconstruction

Leading the UK Academic Response

DMU became the first UK university to respond to the Royal Society and Universities UK’s call for contributions to Ukraine’s post-war recovery. Our comprehensive report, developed in collaboration with 58 researchers across multiple disciplines, has established the foundation for ongoing partnership with Ukrainian institutions and government bodies.

The Crisis-Responsive International Science Partnership (CRISP)

To systematize our contribution to Ukraine’s recovery, we developed CRISP, an innovative framework designed to streamline two-way communication between UK research excellence and international impact. Working in collaboration the UK Science and Technology Network, CRISP represents a new model for rapid academic mobilization in crisis situations, and enables researchers to respond effectively to urgent global challenges.

Our Areas of Engagement

Working with partners including The MHPSS Collaborative, Cormack Consultancy Group, and multiple UK and Ukrainian government departments, we are advancing initiatives across five interconnected streams:

  • Mental health work that supports trauma-informed interventions for conflict-affected populations.
  • AI-powered technology that is being explored for mine detection and clearance operations.
  • Innovative oral healthcare solutions to war-affected regions
  • Developing cost-effective artificial limbs for amputees in disadvantaged populations.
  • Underpinning all streams is our focus on civil society capacity-building and evidence-based economic reconstruction strategies.
Recognition and Impact

Our work has achieved policy recognition, with DMU research mentioned in a ministerial speech and shared directly with Ukrainian government officials. We have presented over 30 DMU research projects in our report and engaged with key UK government departments as we work towards becoming a strategic partner in the decade-long international research efforts to support Ukraine’s recovery.

Get Involved

The scale and complexity of Ukraine’s reconstruction requires sustained collaboration across disciplines and sectors. If your research or expertise could contribute to any of our workstreams, we welcome your involvement in this vital international effort.
